Reference Books:

There are three reference sets that will be useful for events that took place prior to 2000. 

REF 306.09 PEN Bowling, Beatniks and Bell Bottoms--This set covers popular culture of the 20th century.

REF 973.9 ST The Encyclopedia of Popular Culture--This also covers major events in popular culture.

REF 973.9 AME American Decades--Covers the history of the U.S. by decade including  key news events. 

For those with a public library card:

Student Resource Center and Opposing Viewpoints have excellent resources from a variety of sources (books, magazines, newspapers)

For articles online:

Findarticles.com has free news and magazine articles from international sources

New York Times has archived it's paper back to 1981
